Synopsis

New Centre for Palliative care

10 years after it established the country’s first Palliative Care Department, King’s College London is still leading development in this relatively new area of medical research, both in the UK and overseas.
In setting up the original department, King’s College London recognised the importance of creating palliative care as an academic discipline.
A relatively new specialty within medicine, palliative care, the total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, had grown out of the hospices that came from the work of Dame Cicely Saunders and has increased in importance as health professionals have come to appreciate the diversity of problems this approach to patients covers.  In the world of palliative care the control of pain, of other symptoms, and of psychological, social and spiritual problems is paramount.
Now, as this groundbreaking department approaches its 10th anniversary, King's is looking to push the boundaries yet again, with the development of a new Institute of Palliative Care that will extend the college’s commitment to both the teaching of and research into this increasingly important aspect of modern medicine.
Palliative Care aims to achieve the best possible quality of life & dignity for patients and their families. King’s College London’s commitment to innovative research is to ensure improved care and the discovery of more effective treatments for a wide range of non responsive illnesses.
